I saw Janis Joplin! OK, this time it wasn't the real thing but it sure felt like it. A good friend who works for ZachTheatre in Austin was nice enough to take a few of us to the yearly production of One Night with Janis Joplin. As soon as we arrived we got feather boas and took pictures with Janis (or a large picture of her).
Kacee Clanton played Janis, who told us about growing up in Port Arthur, TX with a mom who had also been a singer, and about selling her paintings at a local coffee shop. With the looks, voice, and mannerisms of Janis, she performed favorites like Ball and Chain,Cry Baby, Piece of My Heart, and Me and Bobby McGee, with the crowd clapping and singing along. And of course the feather boas made it that much more fun!
She talked about her influences including Odetta, Bessie Smith, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone. They were also part of the show, brought to life by Tiffany Mann. What a great voice she has, to be able to sing like all of those legends.
We brought Janis out for an encore, and she ended the show with Mercedes Benz. It was a giant sing-along; who doesn't know the words to that one? The crowd was a mix of young and old, proving that even some young people are hip enough to know about Janis, man.
It was so much fun, like going back in time. I will see this one again.

I saw a Beatle! I spent more than I normally would to get a good seat and was not disappointed. At almost 71 (today is his birthday!) Sir Paul still rocked like the seasoned professional he is. The 2nd of 2 sold out shows at the Frank Erwin Center was flawless and included really great imagery with giant screens and laser lights. Images from his life and career were displayed behind the stage which was also flanked by screens that zoomed in on Paul and the band throughout the show, giving every one of the almost 18,000 of us close up views and opportunities for great pictures. I counted 36 songs from the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Wings, and current selections. They played 2 encores, and somehow I knew the second would start with Yesterday, which was what I wanted to hear. There were awesome fireworks and pyrotechnics, inside the Erwin Center! The show ended with an explosion of confetti that literally filled the stadium. Now that I've had a taste I will want more McCartney. Keep on keepin on Paul!
